About
Antichità Alberto Di Castro is pleased to welcome you to TEFAF Online New York, a digital marketplace which translates the elite experience of TEFAF’s in-person Fairs to a virtual setting. This online Fair challenges exhibitors to choose a single work which best represents their expertise.
One of our gallery’s specializations is the acquisition, study and sale of Judaica art objects. The Italian Jewish communities, and Rome in particular, have produced true art historical liturgical masterpieces.
Thus, for TEFAF Online we present a complete mechanical circumcision set in embossed silver, executed in Rome in 1761 for Rabbi and doctor Abraham Modigliani (famous painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani, born in Livorno in 1884, was one of his descendants).
The inaugural TEFAF Online Fair will be held November 1-4, 2020, with two preview days on October 30 and 31, 2020. For the duration of the event, we will be available on the other side of the screen for discussion and business.
The Modigliani Circumcision Set
The complete mechanical circumcision set in embossed silver, was executed in 1761 in Rome for the Rabbi and doctor Abraham Modigliani; forefather of that refined and cultured family which centuries later would boast the acclaimed painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani. Comprising a knife and shield, both engraved with the Modigliani family coat-of-arms, it is undoubtedly the most noteworthy Roman example of a complete Milah set known today.
The Modigliani family coat-of-arms, as well as Hebrew biblical verses from Sephardi-Roman tradition, are engraved on both the knife and the shield (also known as a lilium for its characteristic shape). The Modigliani crest is repeated on the recto and verso of the knife, where the client’s initials, AM, are also inscribed.
