A pair or scagliola paintings portraying Kenilworth Castle and Fountains Abbey — ruins in the English countryside around which picturesque parks were developed toward the end of the eighteenth century. The inscriptions on the frame indicate that they were important gifts given by “Lady Arundel at Wardour Castle.”
The artist used a combination of scagliola (an Italian technique that employs a mixture of gesso, lime, and glue to imitate marble) and traditional painting, using the scagliola panel as a canvas.
